Bury Drop In thanks volunteers during volunteers’ week
Bury Drop In is proud to join charities and voluntary organisations across the UK in celebrating Volunteers’ Week 2026 from 1–7 June 2026. Now in its 42nd year, the national campaign recognises the outstanding contribution volunteers make to communities nationwide.
Volunteers continue to play a vital role at Bury Drop In, supporting people experiencing homelessness across West Suffolk. From offering practical help and emotional support to creating a welcoming environment for guests, volunteers remain at the heart of the charity’s day-to-day work.
Following the charity’s milestone 10th anniversary celebrations last year, Bury Drop In is using this year’s Volunteers’ Week to once again recognise and thank the individuals whose dedication and compassion make its services possible.
Sabine Dornbusch, General Manager at Bury Drop In, said: “Our volunteers are at the heart of Bury Drop In. Every day they give their time, compassion, and commitment to support people facing incredibly difficult circumstances. Volunteers’ Week is an opportunity to celebrate their contribution and thank them for the difference they make within our community. We will be holding a BBQ during July to thank our volunteers.”
Last year alone, volunteers contributed thousands of hours supporting the charity through a wide range of roles, including befriending guests, welcoming visitors at drop in sessions, assisting with safeguarding and reception duties, and helping distribute emergency provisions such as sleeping bags, tents, clothing, and toiletries.
Long-standing volunteer Kathy, who has been part of Bury Drop In since its early days, reflected on her experience: “We should not take anything for granted; none of us knows when we might find ourselves homeless or in need of support.”
Kathy joined the charity in 2016 and continues to play an integral role across multiple areas including sorting through donations and befriending. Her dedication extends beyond these roles, and she regularly acts as an ambassador with other community groups.
Bury Drop In is always looking to welcome new volunteers who want to make a positive difference, connect with others, and develop valuable new skills. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available across the charity.
