Ten year anniversary report

2025 marks ten years of Bury Drop In, and a decade of invaluable work, providing a safe and welcoming safe space for homeless and vulnerably housed people.

We’re delighted to share to our special anniversary report, a celebration of our journey through the words and photos of our volunteers, guests, and supporters.

Bury Drop In timeline, 2015-2025. Our story so far…

Aug 2015
  • Bury Drop In is founded and the constitution is formed.
  • Doors open at the Elven Centre, Garland Street.
  • 2 guests welcomed in the first session, supported by 15 volunteers.
2016
  • 50 registered guests regularly attend weekly drop-in sessions.
Sep 2017
  • Sessions move to Trinity Methodist Church while Elven Centre closes for building work.
Oct 2018
  • Looking for Change campaign launched in partnership with:
    • West Suffolk Council
    • Suffolk Constabulary
    • Bury St Edmunds Town Council
Dec 2018
  • Appointment of a Communications and Human Resources Manager. Responsible for overseeing and managing the charity’s marketing, public relations, volunteer recruitment and fundraising.
Sep 2019
  • Launch of Table 1, a self-help group supporting guest independence and progression, in partnership with Realise Futures.
2020 (COVID-19 Response)
  • Face-to-face sessions suspended.
  • SMS welfare support service launched, manned daily by volunteers.
  • WhatsApp group created for Table 1 members.
  • Weekly Zoom coffee mornings begin to maintain volunteer connection.
Early 2021
  • Trustees begin planning the reopening of face-to-face sessions.
  • Steering group formed to shape the 2023-2026 vision and strategy.
May 2021
  • 5,000 meals delivered by volunteers to vulnerable guests over the past year.
Oct 2021
  • General Manager appointed to oversee charity operations.
  • Face-to-face sessions reopen under COVID-safe conditions.
  • Guest numbers rise amid cost-of-living crisis, supported by 56 volunteers.
Oct 2022
  • Emergency dental treatment made available for registered guests.
Oct 2023
  • Dental treatment initiative relaunched to address urgent needs; six guests on waiting list for emergency treatment.
2024
  • Guest numbers rise significantly – around 150 registered guests, supported by 52 volunteers.
Mar 2024
  • High Sheriff Award presented for outstanding community service.
Aug 2025
  • Bury Drop In celebrates 10 years of supporting vulnerable people in our community.
