From High Sheriff to Patron – Mark Pendlington DL joins Bury Drop In to help build on a decade of impact.

Bury Drop In is delighted to announce that Mark Pendlington DL has joined the charity as Patron during our landmark 10th anniversary year, marking a decade of dedicated service to people facing homelessness in Bury St Edmunds.

Mark is no stranger to our work. In 2023/2024, during his tenure as High Sheriff of Suffolk, he selected Bury Drop In for one of his prestigious High Sheriff Awards, recognising the charity’s outstanding service to the community. His decision to now serve as Patron reflects his ongoing commitment to supporting homeless and vulnerably housed people. Mark has extensive working experience across public and private sectors, including industry, voluntary organisations, education, economic development, and academia. On Suffolk Day in June, Mark was awarded the Suffolk Medal to recognise his many years of service to the county.

Founded in 2015, Bury Drop In has become a trusted lifeline for people in Bury St Edmunds who are homeless or vulnerably housed, providing nutritious meals, emergency provisions, signposting to specialist support, and a safe space.

One guest, Ben (name changed for privacy), recalls how Bury Drop In has supported him “The volunteers are kind, always ask how I’m doing, and the food and vouchers helped me survive. But most of all, it’s the support to connect with services that has made the difference.”

Mark Pendlington DL said: “I am delighted to become Patron of Bury Drop In and to help support those who are among the most vulnerable in society. I am inspired by the amazing work of the dedicated professional team and volunteers, who are joined by many partner organisations in offering a trusted, secure and safe environment for those most in need. It is a privilege to be part of this very special team.”

Robert Green, chair of trustees, said: “We are honoured and delighted to welcome Mark as our Patron. His recognition last year was a tremendous encouragement to our team and guests. Mark’s passion for Bury Drop In, combined with his expertise, will help us strengthen our impact for years to come.”

The charity will be celebrating its 10th anniversary throughout the year with a series of events, stories, and a special anniversary report; celebrating the charity through the words and photos of volunteers, guests and supporters — all aimed at raising awareness of homelessness and inspiring local action.
